Its Antiquity:

The present temple site and the eastern part of Chittoor district was under the jurisdiction of the Rajas of Thondamandalam. It was exceedingly famous for temples and religious activities. The rulers were highly religious minded and devoted time and might for propagation of Daiva Bhakthi through several kinds of spiritual acitivities, like performing Nithya Naimithika Worship, together with celebrating Kalyanotsavas, Rathotsavas, Float Festivals and Daivakaryas, fortifying the dictum' Yada Raja Thada Praja' as is the King, so are the people. A certain King belonging to Chola Dynasty was an ardent Vaishnava Bhakta. He ruled the people like father bestowing love and affection on his children. His involvement in the religious activities was highly applauded and people prospered due to timely rains and bumper harvests. They emulated him in every religious activity.

The origin of any spiritual centre is associated with the play of the Invisible Daivams, who through several of their mysterious phenomena cause the Mother Earth to throw up adorable objects at certain places, like Swayambhu Lingas or superably sculpted Vigrahas. Rising from those obscure, simple and sublime places in the beginning, they shoot up into firmanent of reputation due to human endeavours, guided and inspired at every stage by the heavenly lords. Sages and God intoxicated Mahatmas appearing on the scene lead the humanist religionists to construct gigantic mandirs and introduce innumerable auspicious prayer services for the prosperity of pious public. Implementing the sacred traditions and offering a wide range of prayer services, the God-fearing theists achieve what they have been longing for. The worshipful deities, gratified with pure devotion shower boons and make the sevarthis lead a peaceful and contended life. This is going on since the dawn of religious consciousness in people and proceeding towards the eternity.
